The Journey Begins

Hello all! Welcome to my blog :)

I am beginning to pack for China, with my departure steadily creeping up on me... I leave LAX at 7:45 AM on Wednesday March 25th. After a small layover in San Francisco, my adviser and I will be making a ~13 hour flight to Beijing! We arrive around 2 PM on Thursday, and spend the night in Beijing. One or two days later, we drive to Tangshan, in the Hebei Province. The city is about 100 miles east of Beijing, and has a population in the vicinity of 7 million people!

After a few days of setup, we should be getting going on our field work! The goal of our trip is to try and ascertain a recurrence interval for the Tangshan fault, which means we want to know how often earthquakes occur on average.

At the end of my trip, Mom, Dad, and Becca will be joining me in Beijing for 8 days of sightseeing! I am really looking forward to that portion of the trip...

Anyway, I had best get to packing. I'll try and update periodically on how my work is going and post some pictures. Unfortunately, I have no idea if I will have much time or access to the internet. My goal is to post once or twice a week!

Thanks for reading, and I'd love to hear your comments along the way. I'm sure English will be very exciting to see after a few weeks in China!

  1. I'm commenting early. How's that 13 hour flight going? How're the legs and how's that knot in your back? I hope you're not flying Southwest or else you'd be stopping at every island in the Pacific. We'll be watchin' you!
